    Carbon Footprint Assessment FAQs

Everything UK SMEs ask before commissioning a GHG Protocol carbon footprint.

A carbon footprint assessment measures all the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions your business is responsible for, across Scope 1 (direct fuel and fleet), Scope 2 (purchased electricity) and Scope 3 (supply chain, travel, commuting, waste, use of sold products). The output is an assured figure in tonnes of CO₂e, broken down by source, calculated to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard using the latest UK DEFRA emission factors.

You receive a professional Carbon Impact Report, a branded PDF showing your total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, breakdowns by category and site, year-on-year comparisons (where applicable), and prioritised reduction recommendations. The report is suitable for sharing with clients, retailers, NHS procurement, EcoVadis assessors and as the baseline for a PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plan.

Typically 4 to 8 weeks end-to-end: data handover (weeks 1 to 2), calculation and modelling (weeks 3 to 5), draft review and sign-off (weeks 6 to 8). A 10 business day expedited option is available for tight tender deadlines. Larger or multi-site businesses can run longer; SMEs with clean data often complete sooner.

We send a structured intake covering energy bills (electricity and gas), fleet and business travel, employee headcount and commuting patterns, waste, water and your top suppliers by spend. Most SMEs can gather this in a few working days. Where data is missing, we use GHG Protocol-recognised proxies and document the assumption in the report.

For UK SMEs, a full Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint assessment from a specialist consultant typically starts from £895+VAT for the smallest organisations (1–2 employees) and rises with employee count, number of sites and the depth of Scope 3 coverage required. Our full pricing band table is published on the pricing page, and we confirm a fixed fee after a free 30-minute scoping call, no hourly billing.

Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources you own or control, gas boilers, company vehicles, refrigerant leaks. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the electricity, heat and steam you purchase. Scope 3 covers all other indirect emissions in your value chain, purchased goods, freight, business travel, employee commuting, waste, and the use and end-of-life of products you sell. For most SMEs, Scope 3 is the largest of the three.

The assessment provides the assured emissions baseline you need. PPN 006 (mandatory on central government contracts above £5m) and the NHS Net Zero Supplier Roadmap require a published Carbon Reduction Plan that builds on a GHG Protocol footprint. SECR requires Scope 1, 2 and a single material Scope 3 category to be reported in your statutory accounts. Our assessment satisfies the data requirements of all three.

All calculations follow the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard, using the latest UK Government (DEFRA / BEIS) conversion factors. This is the methodology accepted by SECR, PPN 006, SBTi, EcoVadis and ISO 14064.

Yes. The GHG Protocol is scalable and most of our clients are UK SMEs from 5 to 500 employees. The methodology is the same as for FTSE 100 companies, only the data volume changes. A small business can have a fully assured footprint in a few weeks for a fraction of the cost of an in-house team.

The Carbon Impact Report is the foundation for everything downstream: a Carbon Reduction Plan for tenders and PPN 006, ISO 14068-aligned carbon neutral certification, a shareable carbon dashboard to publish your assured emissions, retailer ESG questionnaires, EcoVadis or B-Corp submissions, and annual re-baselining to track progress.
